ABSTRACT

The definition of Sabkha in Arabic language, is the earth near the sea and lakes, It is characterized as compressible and very low in bearing capacity. It shows variable amount and concentration of salt in water that exists in the soil voids. There are many projects under construction in Misurata city in Libya, especially the roads to connect some villages around the city with the city centre. This paper discussing the case study for such roads on Sabkha soils that exist in the South-East of Misurata city, where, the Araar tourist village will be constructed on the sea shore. This type of problematic soil causes some engineering problems like differential settlement and failures under loads. This paper is dealing with studying the engineering characteristics of these soils, and proposing a solution of soil treatment by cut and filling method for construction of the road.

Keywords: Sabkha; Misurata; Ground improvement; Weak soil.
