ABSTRACT
A case study on the use of vibro stone columns for improvement of weak sandy silty clayey soil under a mat foundation of a building located in the south-west of Iran (Ahwaz city) is presented. Subsurface geotechnical conditions, building characteristics and design procedure of soil improvement are briefly reviewed. The applicability and performance of designed improvement were verified via some in-situ 1m width plate loading and SPT tests before and after improvement implementation. The results of verification and proof tests are presented and discussed. Comparing the design parameters and criteria with tests results indicated that the selected design procedure is proper. Also, some conclusions on the behavior and efficiency of vibro stone columns for mixed soils improvement are presented.
