Prologue

The Sixth International Conference on Computational Stochastic Mechanics (CSM6) was held on the island of Rhodes (Rodos), Greece on June 13–16, 2010. This conference was the sequel to the Fifth International Conference on Computational Stochastic Mechanics (CSM5) which was also held on the island of Rhodes (Rodos), Greece on June 21–23, 2006. The aim of this series of conferences is to provide a forum for exchanging ideas on the status of computational methods as they apply to stochastic mechanics and related engineering and applied science fields, and for identifying needs for further research.

This volume comprises the papers presented in the conference, as well as a few papers that were initially accepted for presentation but whose authors were unable, under extenuating circumstances, to attend the conference. The papers are listed in alphabetical order based on the last name of the first author. Themes addressed include: Aerospace Engineering; Biomechanics; Characterization of Materials with Random Properties; Earthquake Engineering; Engineering Seismology; Geotechnical Engineering and Geomechanics; Monte Carlo Simulation Techniques; Multi-Objective Optimization Under Uncertainty; Linear and Nonlinear Stochastic Dynamics; Offshore Engineering; Random Processes and Fields: Theory, Analysis and Simulation; Reliability Analysis; Reliability-Based Optimal Design; Stochastic Differential Equations; Stochastic Finite Element Methods; Structural Health Monitoring, Identification and Control; and Wind Engineering.

The Conference also celebrated the 80th Anniversary of the birthday of Dr. Masanobu Shinozuka, the Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of California at Irvine, whose work has contributed in such a fundamental and legendary way to the development of the field of Computational Stochastic Mechanics. A brief summary of his visionary and discipline-defining career and achievements is provided in the Dedication.

The partial support of the organization of the conference from Rice University is acknowledged. The secretarial support of Ms. T. Okoye is appreciated. The assistance of X. Y. Guo, F. Kong and Y. Kougioumtzoglou in several aspects of the conference organization is also appreciated.

Special thanks are due to Professor A. Pirrotta for the synthesis and stewardship of the conference site.

It is hoped that this volume will add to the dissemination of established and of developing techniques for uncertainty quantification in the analysis and design of diverse engineering and applied science systems.
