ABSTRACT

This article reviews the challenges faced by the PSD system providers and the systematic approach to overcome them in the retrofit installation of Platform Screen Doors (PSD).

In order to enhance passenger safety and improve train headways, recently major metro operators have started retrofitting their stations by deploying Platform Screen Doors at the platform edges. During retrofitting period, there should not be any disruption to train service, does not cause any inconvenience to the commuters and the station has to be operational as per normal. This poses many challenges to PSD suppliers as they have to commit to meet the tight project schedule and yet only can carry out most of the site work during silent/engineering hours. It requires meticulous planning and execution.

Unlike the new station installations, the PSD retrofit installation poses multitudes of challenges and wider disciplinary expertise from the PSD system providers. Apart from PSD system knowledge and its interfaces with various systems, they need to possess expertise and knowledge in the areas of structural engineering, air-conditioning, power, UPS etc.
