ABSTRACT

There has been rapid expansion in the heavy metro market in Asia, particularly in China over the last few years driven by increasing urbanisation and economic development. This will remain a key industry focus going forward. However there are also a number of systems that have been in service, many commissioned since the 1980s that are now approaching the point where implementation of the modern systems being employed in green-field projects would reap significant operation and maintenance benefits.

Upgrade plans that deliver these improvements have to be developed to allow continued operation of existing systems with minimum or no disruption. This requires careful planning of system solutions and migration plans as well as flexible (but appropriately safe) operation and access procedures.
