ABSTRACT

The railway system is a complex installation with various electromagnetic sources and sensitive equipment coexistence together. With such high density of diverse systems operating together in very close proximity, the application of EMC standards is not a guarantee of satisfactory performance. Therefore Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements are specified in railway projects with the aim of minimizing the probability of EMI problems to an acceptable level.

The paper discuss the immunity and emission requirements for various railway systems specified in the railway EMC set of product-specific International Standards. The railway system has to be designed and tested to ensure compliance with applicable EMC standards. In addition, the paper also highlights the important to establish the EMC process and strategy at the start of the project and consider all areas of concern for the complete project cycle. To ensure complete EMC performance, proper EMC installation guidelines and good EMC engineering practices should be established and followed.

Keywords: Electromagnetic compatibility, EMC standards, EMC management plan.
