ABSTRACT

The popularity of cars in the 21st century has led to economic growth, but the current transport system centering on cars currently faces a huge crisis. Nowadays, the increase in passenger vehicles (below auto) is the main reason for the increasing traffic congestion and social cost. Ranked ninth in the world in terms of production of greenhouse gases, Korea will have to join international efforts to curb the emission of greenhouse gases. This study attempted to find out the inertia effect of mode choice and reduction effect of carbon dioxide (CO2) by promoting the Green Transport Mode (bus, subway, bicycle) in Korea. Specifically, a survey on mode choice was conducted to look into the inertia effect of mode choice. As a result of the survey, the inertia effect was found to be 48.2% for passenger vehicles, 42.9% for subway, and 33% for bus. On the other hand, scenario analysis was conducted to estimate the reduction effect of each green mode. The reduction effect of CO2 was analyzed through transport demand analysis and interpolation method. This method enabled producing the map of CO2 generation on the road and calculated the reduction effect in each scenario. The results showed that 1,400~10,000t CO2 reduction was realized each year by changing the 5~10% demand of auto to green transport mode. A sustainable transport strategy should be started with the management of auto demand to enhance the efficiency of transportation systems. The results of this study could be applied to the policy of controlling auto demand and reducing greenhouse gases.
