ABSTRACT
Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) have been in the spotlight of the materials science community for their superb strength and elasticity, which surpasses those of conventional metals. Their metastable nature however has been considered a significant disadvantage for their processing. In this talk I will show that when utilizing the supercooled liquid state they can be processed under similar conditions than used for plastic processing. I will give examples of net-shaping of BMGs into complex geometries with features on multiple length scales including 10 nm up to 10 cm with a focus on the miniature length scale. The combined superb properties of metallic glasses and the unprecedented ease of shaping on this length scale promise wide spread usage of this technology in the miniature and MEMS world.
