ABSTRACT

At HSG-IMAT a new concept for a 6 bit absolutely encoded optical angular encoder has been developed. The key element of the sensor concept is a disc with a high precision solid measure which is fabricated using the well known manufacturing process for compact discs (CD-Technology). Using this process, it is possible to fabricate a high precision solid measure in high quantities and at low manufacturing costs. The challenge for the presented encoder were the extremely small outer dimensions of only 12 × 12 × 12 mm3 and the requirement for a set-up which is suitable for reflow solder mounting. Using a specially designed optical module with bare die assembly the compact design of the sensor was achieved. The encoder disc was made of PEEK to withstand the thermal stress during the soldering process. The experimental results show the great potential of this encoder.
