ABSTRACT

In order to investigate the influence of cutting edge radius on the size effect in micro cutting process, a molecular dynamics model with cutting edge radius is used to simulate the process of orthogonal cutting using LAMMPS. Moreover, the relationship between cutting force and undeformed chip thickness is established. The results indicate that the cutting force is linear with undeformed chip thickness and not proportional when undeformed chip thickness is more than height of tool edge, the formula is fit with simulation data well, the negative effective rake angle caused by tool edge is an important reason for size effect.
