A Simplified Procedure to Determine the Deflection of Statically Indeterminate Structures
ABSTRACT
In the study presented here, the problem of calculating deflection of statically indeterminate continuous beams and structural frames is addressed. The elastic line equation, taught in many standard courses in structural mechanics is used to determine the structure deflections. In the investigated method, the structure is divided into a simply supported members in which the elastic line equation is applied to calculate the deflection shape of the structure. The results are compared with the finite element method (FEM) and good agreement is obtained. Moreover, the advantage of this method is that it is simplified, general, not time-consuming, and it can be standardised to this type of structures.
