ABSTRACT

Recent advances in the configuration, materials, and market design of very light jet (VLJ) aircraft are reviewed; and recommendations are made for designing cost–effective high–performance VLJ aircrafts for today‘s aerospace market. Forecast technical information for various VLJ aircrafts in the market have been studied for competitor analysis purpose. It has been shown by graphical plots that direct operating cost (DOC) and aircraft price play an important role in designing a cost-effective aircraft for current aerospace market. The conventional and unconventional configurations in VLJs design has been discussed for designing VLJ aircrafts with improved performance. It has been recommended to adopt multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) approach and to select appropriate/specific composite materials for designing high-performance VLJs. Smart aeronautical systems have been highlighted; and it has been suggested to integrate these smart systems into the aircraft systems to ensure safety and reliability for designing new high-performance VLJ aircrafts.
