ABSTRACT

The work present here seeks to predict dynamic response of Nomex honeycomb sandwich beams with aluminium alloy skins under impact loading. Projectile impact test is carried out to investigate the damage mechanism and failure mode under different impact velocities. Sandwich beams dynamic response depends both on the metallic skin’s thickness and projectile impact initial speed. Strain-time history curves of the control points and the deflection-time history curve of back skin central point are analyzed in this paper. Analytic model based on the partition energy method and experimental data is proposed to deduce the energy distribution of the absorption energy from impact projectile initial kinetic energy consumed via elastic bending deformation or irreversible plastic deformation and damage.
