Higher Education in Disaster Management: The TISS Experience*

ABSTRACT

Consolidating sixty years of TISS experience coupled with the ideological commitment to social and environmental justice, a Masters' program in Disaster Management was introduced at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in 2007. The paper offers the organizing principles that guide the perspective of the programwhich was evolved through an intense process of exploratory review, consultation and discussion with diverse experts and practitioners from a variety of constituencies. It also shares the objectives of the Masters' Program in disaster management at the university level, and describes the framework and course contents and also discusses howthe programattempts to interweave theory and practice components.
