Biography

Professor Gabi Ben-Dor (1950) received his Ph.D. (1978) from UTIAS under the supervision of Professor I.I. Glass. He joined the Ben-Gurion University in 1979 from where he retired as a Professor Emeritus in 2019. Among his managerial duties he served as Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, and Director of the Institutes for Applied Research.

He was awarded the G.N. Paterson Award for outstanding performance during his Ph.D. studies (1978); became the first incumbent of the Mower Professorial Chair in Shock Wave Studies (2000); won Professor Hanin's Award for outstanding research on the "Revision of the state-of-the-knowledge of the reflection phenomena of shock waves in steady flows" (2002); received BGU's Rector Award for being the Outstanding Researcher of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences (2006); received the University of Rome's Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Research of Gasdynamics and Its Application (2006); named as Fellow of the Indian Society of Shock Wave Research (2005); appointed as Centenary Professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) (2009); awarded the Acad. N.N. Semenov Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Engineering Sciences for Outstanding Research in Shock Wave Related Phenomena (2009).

Professor Gabi Ben-Dor has authored five books and two Handbooks; edited the Proceedings of ISSW30, published about 300 journal papers; 100 chapters in collective volumes; presented 465 papers in scientific conferences (out of which 33 were plenary/invited); supervised about 40 M.Sc. and 20 Ph.D. students.
