Abstract

This paper gives a brief review of the activities of Sub-commission XV-E “Tubular Structures”. Sub-commission XV-E is a sub-commission of Commission XV “Design, Analysis and Fabrication of Welded Structures” of the International Institute of Welding (IIW) and is the committee which initiates and coordinates the International Symposia on Tubular Structures (ISTS). The first symposium was held in 1984 in Boston, USA and the current one in Singapore is the 17th Symposium. Further, the committee initiates and discusses new research related to the design, behavior, static strength and fatigue strength of welded joints in structures made of circular, rectangular and other-shaped hollow sections, and drafts design rules for IIW and ISO (International Organization for Standardization) on this topic. For example, the “Static design procedure for welded hollow-section joints - ISO 14346: 2013”, and the “Fatigue design procedure for welded hollow section joints - Recommendations - ISO 14347: 2008”.

Biography

Prof. Dr. Jaap Wardenier (1943) is emeritus Professor Steel Structures from Delft University of Technology and emeritus Visiting Professor of the National University of Singapore. He was a member or chairman of many National and International committees. He gave lectures and courses in many countries and is the author or co-author of many books, Design Guides and scientific publications. In the 90ties he was the initiator and director of the “European Steel Design Education Program” (ESDEP). He received several Awards and honorary memberships. Besides his scientific activities he was engaged as a consultant or arbitrator for many projects (buildings, bridges, offshore structures and other civil engineering structures) among others in Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, India, Malaysia, Norway, The Netherlands, Singapore and Spain. His experience with Tubular Structures started in 1969 when he visited the UK and Germany in the framework of his MSc study on Tubular Structures. His book “Hollow section joints” (1982) was the bases of many design recommendations on Tubular Structures and was used in many countries. The book by Wardenier, Packer, Zhao and van der Vegte gives the background for the ISO 14346 (2013) recommendations on Tubular Structures. Since 1973 he is a member and from 1981 to 1992 he was chairman of the IIW Sub-commission XV-E “Tubular Structures”. Furthermore from 1973 up to 2011 he was member and chairman of many study-groups and the Technical Commission of CIDECT. In 1984 up to 2006 as initiator, he was chairing the International Programme Committee of the International Symposia on Tubular Structures (ISTS).
