ABSTRACT

This paper presents a prototype system for using high-intensity focusedultrasound (HIFU) to treat the PD mouse under the designed stereotactic guidance. More specifically, the proposed system utilizes stereotactic guidance in concert with the technique of multi-modality SPECT/MRI registration. It comprises two key components: an automatic atlas-based SPECT/MR image registration module and a stereotactic positioning module. The reason for using SPECT/MR image registration here is because that imaging of dopamine transporters using 99mTc-TRODA-1 has been successfully applied to mice for the purpose of diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. From the experimental results, the proposed automatic image registration module proves to have comparable performance to that derived from manual drawing by experts. In general, the stereotactic positioning module achieved a positioning accuracy to within 2mm on the average, which is acceptable for the purpose of HIFU treatment.
