Prof. Yossef H. Hatzor, the Lemkin Chair in rock mechanics at BGU, is a graduate of the geotechnical engineering program at U. C. Berkeley, class of 1992. In 1993 he established the graduate program in rock mechanics and geological engineering at Ben-Gurion University and currently functions as the director of Geological Engineering studies and director of the Rock Mechanics Laboratory at BGU. He is involved in major geotechnical and geological engineering projects in Israel including mining, tunneling, and rock slope engineering, the crown of which is the analysis of static and dynamic stability in the rock cliffs of Masada World Heritage Site for which he was awarded the international Shamsher Prakash award for excellence in the practice of geotechnical engineering. He is the Founding President of Israel Rock Mechanics Association, a national ISRM group, and served as President of Israel Geology Society in 2004-5 and. He is the recipient of several national and international research awards and is a member of the editorial boards of the International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences, and Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering. He is the editor of two books and author of 60 articles in scientific journals and peer reviewed collective volumes.
