ABSTRACT

The aim of the present work is to investigate the effect of vortex interaction on laminar chaotic advection causing enhancement in heat transfer. The focus is on finding orientation of vortices which would result into better particle mixing and enhanced heat transfer. The dynamical systems obtained by superimposed velocity field of the fixed Rankine vortex pair in various configurations are investigated. The path-lines of fluid particles show signatures of chaotic motion if a translational motion and pulsation are superimposed on the field of the interacting vortices. Sample results are presented in the form of path of a fluid particle, Poincare sections of the path on a pre-defined plane, the velocity signal, Lyapunov number and autocorrelation of the velocity signal.
