ABSTRACT
The exhaust of Diesel engine is one of the major contributors to the world’s air pollution problem. Hydrogen is expected as one of the most promising renewable energy source to meet the stringent emission norms. In this experimental investigation, the combustion analysis was done on a direct injection (DI) diesel engine using hydrogen with diesel to form a mixture. The hydrogen was injected through intake port. Experimental tests were carried out to study the performances of the engine fuelled with the hydrogen-diesel mixture compared with those fuelled by conventional diesel fuel. The variation of torque, brake power, engine speed, brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), air-fuel ratio (AFR), exhaust gas temperature, volumetric efficiency and brake thermal efficiency are investigated. The enhancement is observed in brake thermal efficiency and fuel consumption rate by 30% and 42% respectively. There is a drop in volumetric efficiency by 13.3%.
