ABSTRACT
It is no secret that cities and towns around the world struggle to maintain accurate CAD records of buried utility lines and other assets under roadways. For decades, ground penetrating radar (GPR) has played a vital role as an accurate locator of pipes and utilities. But one limitation has always been the capability and accuracy of utility mapping at highway speeds. A novel approach has been developed using new technology making the collection of geo-referenced 3D GPR data at highway speeds possible. This paper presents the preliminary results of a precision GPS-guided, high speed, multi-channel GPR survey of the busiest intersection in Salem, NH, USA. The data are analyzed to locate utility laterals, the results of which are saved as a CAD file and used to validate and update the town’s CAD database to prepare for upcoming roadwork. This was achieved with no road down time or traffic control, and minimal time to process large amounts of data.
