China now tops the world in tunneling construction and underground development. The representative city of the infrastructure construction boom is Shanghai. This paper presents the status quo and recent development of underground engineering in MRT, utilities, road tunnels, cross-river tunnels and underground complexes and facilities in Shanghai with typical examples. Challenges and countermeasures are then briefly discussed. Furthermore, lessons learned from experiences of the underground development in Shanghai are addressed. Finally, a future perspective is given as well.
