ABSTRACT

Waste materials such as tire wastes, rubbers and plastics may be used as lightweight materials for geotechnical applications. Tire wastes can be used alone or with sand. It is known that adding tire waste into the sand affects the shear strength values. Tire waste amount, tire waste shape, aspect ratio and sand matrix have very important role on the shear strength of the mixture. In this study, two different sands were mixed with tire waste particles at various ratios and direct shear tests were conducted. Based on the test results, a prediction model using Neural Network (NN) method is proposed to calculate the shear strength of sand with the increasing tire waste content. The performance of accuracies of proposed NN models are quite satisfactory. The proposed NN models are presented as relatively simple explicit mathematical functions for further use by researchers. Also, a brief summary on the geotechnical applications of the processed tire wastes is given.
