ABSTRACT

London Underground Ltd (LUL) is currently undertaking a major upgrade programme for its existing Victoria Station scheme. The existing station scheme, consisting of 2 underground stations for 3 major underground lines located underneath major central London roads, Grade II listed buildings and a busy main railway terminal, suffers from daily passenger congestion, which calls for significant upgrades of the passenger routes. Most of the planned tunnels to improve the passenger flow and emergency access are located at shallow depth in the water-saturated Terrace Gravels. This mixture of gravel and sand requires continuous ground improvement for ground stabilisation, settlement limitation and exclusion of groundwater inflow during tunnel construction. A ground treatment scheme consisting of inclined and vertical jet-grouting columns is currently being developed between the prime designers (Mott MacDonald) and the Contractor (VBN).
