ABSTRACT
Subsurface anomalies in the form of sinkholes, lava tunnels or such cavities with patches of weak or problematic zones are one of the major threats to various civil engineering structures. Moreover, the problematic zone such as a cavity can be present in different shape and size based upon the types of rock formation. There are various methods available for the detection of subsurface anomalies such as the microgravity test method and methods using GPR technique, electrical resistivity and the drilling process monitoring. Each of these methods has its own merits and demerits based upon the applicability to various subsurface conditions. However, considering the fact that the drilling process monitoring can provide with more additional information related to subsurface ground condition, it is advisable to improve this technique with sophisticated data acquisition systems for better results in the future. In this paper, the same has been demonstrated with reference to some field experience under basaltic rock conditions in Mauritius.
