ABSTRACT
Finite element modelling of earth retaining or stabilising structures is generally based on various simplifying assumptions. This paper discusses two modelling assumptions which have been found to have a significant impact on an analysis prediction for a deep excavation in soft clay modelled using the PLAXIS software, namely the lowering of the groundwater table in undrained materials and the use of interface elements for pile foundations. The analysis shows that neither approach is recommended for the situation considered.
