ABSTRACT

This paper describes a new inter-graduate school research and educational program being implemented in Kyoto University since 2009 under the Global COE (Center of Excellence) Program (GCOE) supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) and the Japan Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS). The GCOE program, which is entitled as ``Sustainability/Survivability Science for a Resilient Society Adaptable to Extreme Weather Conditions,'' deals with global problems threatening people's survivability such as extreme weather caused by climatic change or global warming, and related water, environment and disaster issues. A systematic educational program is provided by the cooperation of two research institutes and five graduate schools of the university in order to grow leading researchers and international/regional elites, who can contribute to harmonious coexistence of the global society.
