Automatic Recognition of Machinable Regions for Micro-EDM

ABSTRACT
Electrode Discharge Machining (EDM) plays an important role in the mold manufacturing industry. Besides its capability of machining high hardness material, EDM is also suitable to process micro features. Generally in precise machining, the workpiece is milled to Near Net-shape with a cutting tool first, and then machined with EDM to remove regions that are unmachinable with milling. However, the pre-procedure of EDM is fairly time-consuming. Although some commercial CAD/CAM software would be used in pre-processing of EDM, it still highly relies on the operator's experience to identify whether micro features in the CAD file are suitable for EDM. This study will develop a system that can automatically recognize the uncut-region that cannot be cut by the current tool due to the limitation of geometric features in the CAD file. Tests result in the correct ratio of 100% for uncut-region recognition and just took only 3 seconds.
Keywords: Uncut-Region, Principal Curvature.
