Preface

It is our pleasure to present to you the Proceedings for the 8th International Symposium on Geotechnical Safety and Risk (ISGSR 2022), which was held at the University of Newcastle, Australia between 14 and 16 December 2022. The ISGSR symposium series is under the auspices of the Geotechnical Safety Network (GEOSNet).

The symposium has been held in the following venues:

• 1st ISGSR in Shanghai (China) in 2007
• 2nd ISGSR in Gifu (Japan) in 2009
• 3rd ISGSR in Munich (Germany) in 2011
• 4th ISGSR in Hong Kong (China) in 2013
• 5th ISGSR in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) in 2015
• 6th ISGSR in Denver (USA) in 2017 (also known as Geo-Risk 2017)
• 7th ISGSR in Taipei (Taiwan, China) in 2019

Due to Covid pandemic, the 8th ISGSR has been postponed for more than one year. It is also the first time that ISGSR is held in hybrid mode.

ISGSR 2022 is supported by the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer (OCSE) through the Conference Sponsorship Program, College of Engineering, Science and Environment of the University of Newcastle, Rocscience, WSP, Tetra Tech Coffey, Mott Macdonald and Nanchang University,TC304 (Engineering Practice of Risk Assessment and Management) of International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), and ASCE Geo-Institute Risk Assessment and Management Committee (GI-RAM).

The theme of ISGSR 2022 is "Geotechnical Risk: Big-data, Machine Learning and Climate Change" and will feature the latest research advances and engineering-practice innovations with a focus on the use of probabilistic and risk methodologies in geotechnical engineering.

ISGSR 2022 has 171 presentations. About 50% of them are presented remotely or via recorded videos. In the Proceedings, there are 156 accepted papers from 20 countries/regions. Among them, there are 5 keynote papers including the 7th Wilson Tang Lecture, the 6th Suzanne Lacasse Lecture, and 3 ISSMGE Bright Spark Lectures:

  • The Wilson Tang Lecture was inaugurated by GEOSNet in the 2nd ISGSR (IS-Gifu 2009). The lecture is named to recognize and honour the significant contributions of the late Prof. Wilson Tang, who was one of the founding researchers in geotechnical reliability and risk. We are very honoured that Prof. D.V. Griffiths presented the 7th Wilson Tang Lecture entitled “Geotechnical probability: From FOSM to RFEM” in ISGSR 2022.
  • The Suzanne Lacasse Lecture was established in June 2015, with the approval of the Board of International Society on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) to honour the significant contributions to the geotechnical profession of Dr. Suzanne Lacasse. We are very honoured that Prof. Robert B. Gilbert presented the 6th Suzanne Lacasse Lecture entitled "It Is All About Decisions" in ISGSR 2022.
  • To promote young members of ISSMGE to play a major role in various international and regional conferences, the President of ISSMGE, Prof. Charles Ng, created the Bright Spark Lecture Award for promising young geotechnical engineers/academics to have a chance to deliver keynote and invited lectures at these conferences. It is our great pleasure that Prof. Wenping Gong, Assistant Professor Hui Wang, and Dr. Johan Spross delivered the ISSMGE Bright Spark Lectures in ISGSR 2022.

Last but not the least, we would like to thank all session organizers of ISGSR 2022 for the efforts in inviting submissions and arranging reviews. Many of the efforts were contributed by the members of ISSMGE TC304 "Engineering Practice of Risk Assessment and Management". We are very grateful for their significant contributions.
