Preface

These are the proceedings of the ESREL SRA-E 2025 conference held in Stavanger 15-19 June 2025. The event brings the annual European Safety and Reliability (ESREL) and Society for Risk Analysis Europe (SRA-E) conferences together under one roof at the University of Stavanger, Norway. ESREL 2025 is the 35th ESREL conference, organised under the auspices of the European Safety and Reliability Association (ESRA), see https://esra.website/. The conference series dates back to 1989 and has taken place under the ESREL name since 1992. ESREL was hosted in Stavanger also in 2007. SRA-E 2025 is the 33rd annual SRA-E conference, see https://www.sraeurope.eu/. The scope of the conference is broad, covering all types of topics within risk, safety, security, reliability, resilience, vulnerability and sustainability assessment, perception, communication, management and governance, both theory and application. This year's theme – "Advancing risk, safety and reliability sciences, with applications – from component, to system, to society" – highlights the need for enhanced knowledge within each field, as well as the importance of broadening the perspective and crossing the boundaries of traditional disciplines and research areas. Special focus is placed on societal safety/security issues, such as resilience analysis of critical infrastructures, risk perception, communication and governance. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are addressed in many of the papers included in these proceedings, as well as issues related to maintenance, reliability and risk. Human and organizational factors are also studied in many of the contributions. The application areas range from oil and gas, nuclear and maritime, to cybersecurity, autonomous systems, aviation and health.

About 500 full papers were originally submitted to the conference, along with more than 300 abstracts intended for presentation without accompanying papers. Following the review by the Scientific Committee, 469 papers were accepted and included in these proceedings. The work and effort of the peers involved in the Scientific Committee in helping the authors to improve their papers are greatly appreciated. Special thanks go to the organisers of the Special Sessions of the conference for their initiative and planning, which have resulted in a number of interesting sessions covering a broad spectrum of topics.

The host of the ESREL SRA-E 2025 conference is the University of Stavanger and its affiliated risk management and societal safety group. The conference is sponsored by the University of Stavanger, Presight, Proactima, Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority, Gassco, Lyse, IFE, ESRA Norway, DNV and Safetec. The support is greatly appreciated.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge the local organising committee for their immense work in planning the practical arrangements.
