<title>ABSTRACT</title>
<p>Grid operators face new challenges and greater operational complexity arising from emerging power generation and digital technologies, changing consumption patterns, and new market opportunities. In a three-year project cofunded by the Norwegian Research Council, Institute for Energy Technology is investigating the organizational capabilities such companies need to possess to successfully adapt in a fast-changing market, using a specific power grid company as a pilot. A case-method was developed where practical insights from concrete cases that focus on selected operational challenges inform the development of such capabilities. This paper describes the key elements of this method and illustrates how it was utilized through a concrete case example. The method was embraced by the pilot company, and we found it successful in that it 1) provided relevant input to the capability development, ensuring that ideas and solutions were properly grounded in real operative challenges, 2) facilitated broad involvement and ownership within the company through direct participation in one or several cases, and 3) provided direct value generation in each particular case.</p>
