ABSTRACT

The failure rate of water pipes is influenced by many factors, for instance: soil instability, pipes age, function of the water pipe (transit, main, distribution and water connections), water pressure in the network, flow rate, soil corrosivity, level of groundwater and the pipes material. Operational tests also show the influence of: the season and associated with it temperature of air, ground and water in the water network, on the failure rate of the water pipes. The failure rate of water pipes is characterized by unevenness during the year. This unevenness can be seen specially during analysis of failure rate in the particular seasons of the year. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of atmospheric factors such as seasonal temperature fluctuations on the failures of water pipes, in the context of climatic changes in the analyzed water distribution subsystem. The study was based on a method of average homonymous periods. The results of analysis showed characteristic seasonality of water pipes failure, with high values in autumn and winter months and lower intensity of failures in spring and summer months.
