<title>ABSTRACT</title>
<p>This paper reports on a study and application of serrated cutting edges and of vibrational motion on tissue cutting to reduce the insertion force for commercial and bio-inspired biopsy punches (BPs). The proposed concept mimics a mosquito's maxilla, which adopts a vibrational motion in order to painlessly penetrate human skin. The focus of this study is to investigate the maxilla's vibrational motion and its application to commercial and bio-inspired biopsy punches. The fundamental goal is the minimization of the insertion force at the biopsy punch tip and the soft tissue during insertion procedures. As predicted by a 3D finite element simulation, a reduction of 20&#x223C;40% in the insertion force has been achieved, and encourages further studies and their applications to biomedical devices.  </p><p><italic>Keywords: </italic>Vibrational motion, Micro-serrations, Biopsy needles, Biopsy punches, Micro-manufacturing. </p>
