<title>ABSTRACT</title>
<p>The micro-patterned insert was adopted to reduce cutting forces, friction coefficients and tool wear during hard turning. The pattern on insert surface was fabricated by electro discharge machining (EDM). Then, the cutting forces and chip morphologies were observed and the friction coefficient calculated using continuous and saw chip models with an increase in feed rates, surface velocity. It was observed that the resultant force of the micropatterned insert was decreased by 10.9% to 2.7% due to 34.5% to 9.5% reduction of friction with increasing feed and surface velocity compared with the non-patterned insert. </p><p>Keywords: Hard turning, Hardened steel, Micro-patterned insert, Friction, Chip formation. </p>
