ABSTRACT

Active control of civil and aerospace structures is an inter-disciplinary science, which elicits inputs from structural engineers, electronics and electrical engineers. The algorithms developed are mathematically and computationally intensive, and are required to be operational in real-time conditions and require validation from experimental demonstration. The active constrained layer damping control is a fundamental control methodology which can be categorized as hybrid control with a residual efficiency even under absence of the control voltage. However with application of control voltages, a higher efficiency in the reduction of vibration levels could be achieved. The paper describes a transfer function based control methodology for active constrained layer damping (ACLD) control using piezoelectric patches. A computational example illustrates the methodology for a beam element. A demonstrative experiment conducted on an aluminium plate with piezoelectric patches shows the validation of the method. The methodology requires a-priori knowledge of the frequency domain characteristics of the input dynamic disturbance. Keywords: Active control, PZT, ACLD.
