ABSTRACT

In general, cracks are emanating from the outer surface of coil springs. This paper presents the stress intensity factor and interaction behavior of cracks in a helical coil spring. Radial cracks were introduced at the outer surface of the coil spring which is subjected to far field tension loading. Two different crack geometries such as semi-circular and semi-elliptical were considered. SIF values of cracks were compared to determine their interaction behavior. It is observed that as the crack depth ratio increases , the crack geometry factor increases. Keywords: Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) , Helical Coil Springs , Finite Element Analysis, Radial Cracks.
