ABSTRACT

This paper describes the developing of three-dimensional non-linear finite element models of two types of precast concrete beam -column dowel connections. Two types of precast concrete dry connections were studied. In one type the connecting element was a dowel bar whereas for the second type it was a dowel bar and cleat angle. The parameters studied were ultimate load carrying capacity, energy dissipation capacity and ductility. The behaviour of precast connections under cyclic loading was compared with a monolithic reference specimen. The scale adopted for the model was 1/3. The precast connections and monolithic connection were modeled using three dimensional solid elements and surface-to-surface contact elements. The finite element model of the connections was closely able to predict the overall inelastic performance. The precast specimen with dowel and cleat angle compared well with the reference monolithic specimen in terms of energy dissipation and ductility. The analytical results compared well with the experimental results in the linear region upto yield load.
