ABSTRACT

Offshore wind power is one of the most promising and prominent source of carbon free energy. With new advents in innovations and technologies to carve more energy the offshore wind industries enlarged the capacity of wind turbines by increasing its height and rotor diameter. Based on 5 MW installed capacity, the offshore wind turbines cost nearly $ 1.5 million per MW. The major part of overall capital goes into installation alone which ranges from average of 5% to 15 %, whereas decommissioning cost is nearly half of the installation investment. In this paper, a new concept as conceived and designed by Nagan Srinivasan is taken up for analysis in waves. The proposed structure consists of a keel plate attached with mono column through telescopic rod. Mono Column is further equipped with tilt and telescope mechanism at its top which will facilitate the self-installing feature of this structure and eliminating the need of jack up barge and other vessels for installation and thereby reducing the overall capital investment. Transportation, installation and operating phases govern their design. Response characteristics of the mono column wind float in transportation phase is the primary focus of the study. The analysis are carried out in commercial software ANSYS AQWA and response of the monocolumn wind float for two different sea states are presented.
