Description
The primary aim of this book is to introduce the basic principles for design of composite steel and concrete structures such as composite beams, columns and slabs in accordance with SS EN 1994-1-1: 2009 Eurocode 4: Design of Composite Steel and Concrete Structures – Part 1-1: General Rules and Rules for Buildings. Their design concepts and procedures are illustrated through several design worked examples in this book. Where appropriate, reference to EN 1994-1-1 would mean SS EN 1994-1-1: 2009. In writing this book, it is assumed that most readers are familiar with basic steel design concepts such as the use of both elastic and plastic theories to calculate bending and shear resistances of steel beams and columns as well as to possess some basic knowledge of reinforced concrete design.
This book comprises six (6) Chapters. A general introduction of composite structures is given in Chapter 1. The materials of steel, concrete and shear connectors used to form composite structures are covered in details in Chapter 2. The basic principles for design of composite beams, composite columns and composite slabs according to SS EN 1994-1-1 are summarized in Chapters 3, 4 and 5. Finally, in Chapter 6, several worked examples are provided to illustrate the design procedures.
In the text, a few design parameters are to be determined based on national choices. In this case, these nationally determined parameters are obtained from NA to SS EN 1994-1-1: 2009 Singapore National Annex NA to Eurocode 4: Design of Composite Steel and Concrete Structures – Part 1-1: General Rules and Rules for Buildings. However, design of composite structures in SS EN 1994-1-1 has many cross-references to other Structural Eurocodes; hence, it may be necessary for readers to refer to other Eurocodes such as EN 1990 Basis of Structural Design, EN 1991 Actions on Structures, EN 1992 Design of Concrete Structures and EN 1993 Design of Steel Structures.
This book is written specially as a course book for our practicing engineers and designers who are attending our Eurocode training courses in Singapore and the region. As the British code for composite structures are already being superseded by the new Eurocode, this course book will be useful for engineers and designers who wish to familiarize and switch over quickly to the new design code. Equations for design resistances are presented throughout so that they can be easily programmed into design spreadsheets. In addition, this book should be useful as a reference text for both undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing a degree course in design of composite steel and concrete structures.
Readership: Researchers, engineers and practitioners in the field of structural and civil engineering.
