Volume 4, Issue 4 of Asian Journal of Environment and Disaster Management summarises the research results of the Mekong River Basin Initiative. TheMekong River Basin Initiative is conducted by the Earth Observatory of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, in collaboration with the South- east Asia Disaster Prevention Research Institute (SEADPRI-UKM) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the Asian University Network of Environment and DisasterManagement (AUEDM). It is a research initiative to identify successful cli- mate change adaptation projects and transboundary issues in the Lower Mekong River Basin. The Initiative seeks to identify success factors andmodels for learning as well gaps and issues arising from the transboundary nature of the region that would result in a set of capacity building measures.
This Special Issue is the collection of nine (9) papers that take inventory of the state of adaptation practice in the Lower Mekong River Basin, one of the regions in the world most vulnerable to climate change. The papers discuss current and projected climate impacts, and present a framework for identifying ‘successful’ adaptation projects in practice. A set of five case studies are used to present identified best adaptation practices in this region.
The main target group comprises practitioners and researchers in the region. The papers, containing results of the research initiatives, will contribute to the development of a sound scientific base for decision- and policy-making related to climate change adaptation in the region.
