Advantages of Using a Non-Rigid Cutting Mechanism for the Machining of Glass

Abstract

A non-rigid cutting mechanism has been developed for the fabrication of high-precision micro-grooves, based on the work principle of the AFM mechanism used for nano-scale machining but in a large manufacturing area. This paper will briefly describe the advantages of using this cutting mechanism for the machining of brittle materials, particularly on glass. This system has allowed the fabrication of micro-scale grooves in ductile mode, without the necessity of rigorous environmental conditions. Also, cutting experiments have been performed on glass spheres, in which, by using a force feedback control system, grooves with constant cutting depth have been created.
