Abstract
Topology optimization is a computational tool for determining optimal material distributions. Originally developed for structural optimization, i.e. for light-weight structural design, the methods has now spread to a number of alternative application areas within microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), extremal materials design, fluid mechanics and nano-optics. The method is based on repeated finite element analyses, gradient computations and mathematical programming-based material redistribution steps. The talk will give an overview of the background of the method, recent developments and show applications within single and multi-material design challenges for micro-systems and extremal materials design.
