ABSTRACT

This paper investigates the behaviour of fillet welds between HISTAR steel (460 MPa nominal yield stress) and standard grade steel (350 MPa nominal yield stress). The strength of welds was tested through double lap longitudinal fillet weld specimens. Weld fusion failure between the weld and the HISTAR plate and a traditional shear failure within the weld were observed. Reliability analyses were performed and indicated that suitable reliability based on a capacity reduction factor φ = 0.8. Further testing with controlled welding to Australian Standards is required to determine the sufficiency of the standard for the fusion failures, however the failures within the weld were seen to perform well under AS 4100.
