ABSTRACT
The static load-bearing capacity welded plate-to-plate joints made of high strength steel (HSS) has been investigated. Experimental testing and nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) were conducted to explore the ultimate strength of welded joints. Material properties, residual stresses, load-displacement curves and strain developments were measured in the test. Three dimensional finite element models with incorporation of weld-induced residual stress were developed. The validity of the numerical model was verified by comparison with the experimental results. The numerical results based on the finite element models with and without weld-induced residual stress incorporated showed that the residual stress has no obvious effect on the static load-bearing capacity of HSS welded joints.
