An Approximate Method for Shear Strength of Composite Plate Girders

ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with ultimate shear carrying capacity of composite plate girders. An approximate method based on virtual work principle is proposed to predict the shear strength. The method assumes four stages of failure and takes into account tension field action in the plate girder web. The results are compared with experimental girders tested by other researchers and also with finite element predictions. The predictions by the proposed design method are found reasonably accurate enough for any design office use.
