ABSTRACT

This paper addresses the design of steel curved monorail beams to the strength limit state. Curved beams resist transverse loading by a combination of bending and torsion actions, and the deflections, twist rotation and internal actions are coupled, resulting in geometric non-linearity. As a result, the analysis of curved beams is difficult, and little guidance is given in design codes of practice. Based on parametric studies, a rational design formula is proposed for the strength of curved monorail beams, which can be used in design to a number of national steel standards.
