ABSTRACT

The paper focuses on research subject matter as well as trends for research on steel structures for buildings and building-like structures, discerning major directions insofar as materials, members, connections, systems and analysis are concerned. Fabrication and construction issues are also addressed, inasmuch as the research efforts tie together theories of analysis and design. Design philosophy developments are particularly important, especially for appropriate limit states treatment, performance demands and extreme loading conditions. All subjects feed directly into the design codes that are under continuous development. It is shown that design results are remarkably similar in all regions of the world, with the exception of certain unique characteristics that are dictated by historical engineering preferences but especially environmental needs.
