ABSTRACT
Mobility is dependent on the existence of adequate transportation facilities. Transportation
is a principal component of the economic, social, culture, and political structures of
our society, and thus a vital factor in the civilization. The main objective of this study
is to investigate the state of transportation systems in Jordan, and to explore challenges
facing these systems. Annual reports of the Ministry of Transportation where used for
this purpose. Furthermore, recommendations are given to overcome these challenges. The
main mode of passenger transportation in Jordan is land transportation by mean of automobiles
and buses. Furthermore, freight transportation uses land transportation where it
depends mainly on trucks. Comparing Jordan with other countries in the region shows
that Jordan has acceptable transportation systems since it has about 8,000km of paved
roads. There mare many challenges facing the transportation sector in Jordan such as: lack of
integrated transport facilities and the low efficiency of transport logistics; high average age of
the passengers and goods transport fleets; and increasing number of vehicles on Jordan’s road
network. It is essential to invest in other modes of transportation, especially; using railroad
to transport passenger. Jordan is located in the central geographic location of the Middle East
region, even though of the instability of this part of the world, huge economic opportunities
are rising in the future, therefore, transportation systems are expected to continue contribute
significantly in Jordan’s economic and the entire region economic, therefore, it is recommended
to invest heavily in the transportation sector.
