ABSTRACT

In this study the collapse behavior of reinforced concrete moment framed structures retrofitted with steel braces were investigated. The analysis model structure is a 3-story 3-bay RC moment frames designed only for gravity load. To prevent premature joint failure, steel moment frames were placed within the RC frame. Nonlinear static and dynamic analyses were performed to investigate the seismic performance of the model structures before and after the retrofit. The progressive collapse resisting capacity of the structures were investigated based on the column-loss scenario. According to the analysis results, the RC framed structure retrofitted by steel moment frames and steel bracing showed enhanced performance in terms of both strength and ductility. The added steel frames, even though designed with members with small cross-sections, contributed significantly to enhancing overall performance of the structure by preventing premature joint failure.
