ABSTRACT

Twisted forms are often employed for today’s tall buildings, as are the cases with the Chicago Spire in Chicago, Shanghai Tower in Shanghai and Infinity Tower in Dubai. This paper studies structural systems for twisted tall buildings. Twisted tall buildings of different heights and twisted rates are designed with various structural systems such as diagrids, braced tubes and outrigger systems. The heights of the studied buildings range from 60 to 100 stories, and the twisted rates of the buildings range from 0 to 2 degrees per floor. As the rate of twisting increases, the lateral stiffness of the tower decreases. The rate of stiffness reduction is very much dependent upon the structural systems employed for twisted towers. The comparative efficiency between the structural systems employed for twisted towers is studied.
